Every February Americans honor the rich, significant history of African Americans through Black History Month. This month is dedicated to those who have made important contributions to society through literature, science, politics and many other fields crucial to the success of the United States. The local community is honoring Black History Month through a myriad of ways. Those looking for a way to get involved should look no further than the list below, which highlights ways to show support this February.

1.) Music lovers will rejoice when the OKC Philharmonic honors Black History Month. On Feb. 21, musicians welcome children and adults alike to attend “Celebrate Black History.” The Philharmonic will feature the evolution of the African American influence in America. Musical styles featured include Jazz, Rap, Gospel and the Blues. The event takes place at the OKC Civic Center Music Hall, and for ticket information go to www.okcciviccenter.com.

2.) The Norman Public Library West is hosting its annual African American Read-in on Feb. 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event celebrates the rich heritage through readings from wellknown African American authors, live music and open mic opportunities. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

3.) The beloved Oklahoma City Thunder are participating in Black History Month with its eighth annual “Black History Heroes Challenge,” sponsored by Sprite. In this competition students throughout Oklahoma (kindergarten through 12th grade) may enter the contest though submitting visual art pieces, an essay or a poem that exonerates an individual in black history or an African American who is significant in their own life. Creativity and innovation are encouraged and the winners (one from each of the five age groups) will receive a Thunder prize pack, including recognition at center court prior to half time, an autographed Thunder object and four tickets to the Thunder v. Golden State game. Also the winning entries will be showcased on Feb. 27 on the concourse at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
