Summer is in full swing and so are fun events at Harrah Heritage Park.

On August 6, the Harrah Parks and Recreation Department is, yet again, facilitating the Ace Race Disc Golf Tournament, an event for the entire community. On the Saturday of the event, check in is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Each player will compete during two rounds of 18 holes each. The event costs only $30 and participants not only receive a unique day of fun, but also two identical Discraft prototype discs, a shirt and other assorted disc related merchandise. We sat down with William Bredemeyer, Chairman of the Harrah Parks and Recreation Department and long time disc golfer, to pick his brain about this zany, upcoming event.

Why did Harrah Heritage Park choose a disc golf tournament?

Since 2011 the Harrah Open Disc Golf Tournament has been held in Heritage Park on the last Saturday in February. It’s been extremely successful and had 122 participants this year. In 2015, I was approached by the Oklahoma City Disc Golf Association with the idea of them running a Summer Ace Race. The 2015 Ace Race had over 100 participants, and we expect that number again for 2016. Disc golf is a fun, inexpensive game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Give us more details as to what players can expect during the tournament.

All players will get two shots at each basket with their new discs – hitting the basket is worth one point and aces (staying in the basket) are worth three points. The person with the most points wins!  The purpose of the ace race is to make disc golf fun; it’s a pretty simple concept for someone new to the game, and you are provided with the discs to play. You can pre-register at OKCDGA.com.

What role do you think Harrah Heritage Park plays in the community?

Heritage Park is our crown jewel. Our park is beautiful; it’s a place for people to gather, and families to build memories. Harrah only has a population of just over 5,000, but our park is home to festivals, movie nights, concerts in the park, a walking trail, splash pad and our soon-to-be-finished basketball courts.

The members of the park board, including myself, are all volunteers. Our goal is to give people something to do and keep them entertained. We love our parks, our town and we want to keep people here and share what we have with those who are just stopping for a visit. If you want more information about what we have going in the park please visit cityofharrah.com, or call Patty at City Hall, 405-454-2951.
